Smokers will given FREE 'vape' kits to help kick the habit in new trial by Trafford Council

Smokers will be given free 'vaping' kits to help them quit tobacco for good as part of a new trial.

In a scheme backed by Trafford council, pharmacies will be handing out e-cigarette starter kits to anyone who signs up to the latest smoking cessation pilot in Trafford. People who enrol at a pharmacy will be given a four week 'e-cig' starter kit and a consultation with a stop-smoking advisor.

Health commissioners behind the scheme hope it will improve residents' health and save them money. Spurred on by the fact that Public health researchers say 'e-cigs' are 95pc safer than tobacco.

"While e-cigarettes contain nicotine, just like traditional nicotine patches and gums, they don’t produce the cancer-causing carcinogens that are produced by burning tobacco,” says Ben Fryer, Public Health Registrar at Trafford Council.

"As a result, Public Health England estimates that e-cigarettes are 95% safer than tobacco."

E-cigarettes are recommended as one option to help people stop smoking by Public Health England, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the medical royal colleges.“

The trial is available to Trafford residents who smoke, are aged over 18 and are not pregnant.

It's open until the end of March 2019 at the following pharmacies: Broomwood Pharmacy, Timperley, Limelight Pharmacy, Old Trafford, Davey’s Chemist, Partington. Malcolm’s Pharmacy, Urmston, Hollowood Chemist, Sale and Harry’s Pharmacy, Stretford.

Judith Lloyd, Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing at Trafford Council, said: "One of the best things that anyone can do in 2019 to improve their health and wellbeing is to stop smoking."

“We are offering Trafford residents a free e-cigarette starter kit, with professional smoking cessation support to encourage people to stop smoking in 2019.If you currently smoke but would like to quit, and would like to try a free e-cigarette, please visit one the 6 pharmacies in Trafford who are offering this service before the end of March.”
